OSCE Exam Strategies
๐ฏ Before the Exam
โข Read the question card TWICE โ underline the key verbs (demonstrate, explain, assess, perform)
โข Budget your time: 1 min to read/plan, 6 min to perform, 1 min to wrap up
โข Bring your own equipment if allowed (stethoscope, pen torch, watch with second hand)
โข Practice hand hygiene until it's second nature โ you'll be nervous and may forget
โข Wear professional clinical attire: bare below elbows, no jewellery, name badge
๐ฃ๏ธ During the Station
โข ALWAYS introduce yourself: "Good morning, my name is [Name], I'm a student nurse. I'll be [procedure] today."
โข Confirm patient identity EVERY station โ even if the examiner didn't ask you to
โข Narrate as you go: "I'm now palpating for the radial pulse..." โ examiners can't mark what they can't see/hear
โข If you make a mistake, DON'T panic โ acknowledge it and correct: "I realize I should have washed my hands first. Let me do that now."
โข Maintain eye contact with the "patient" โ not the examiner
โข End every station with: "Is there anything else I can help you with?" and "I would document this procedure in the nursing notes."
โ ๏ธ Automatic Fail Points (Avoid at ALL Costs)
โข Failing to identify the patient (skip two identifiers = instant fail)
โข Not performing hand hygiene at the appropriate moment
โข Breaking sterile technique during an aseptic procedure
โข Incorrect sharps disposal (recapping, not using sharps bin)
โข Unsafe practice: forcing a catheter, not checking for allergies, wrong drug route
โข Poor communication: not obtaining consent, not explaining the procedure, not maintaining dignity
๐ง Memory Anchors for Stations
โข Every station starts the same: Introduce โ Identify โ Consent โ Hand hygiene โ Position
โข Every station ends the same: Comfort โ Dispose โ Hand hygiene โ Document โ "Any questions?"
โข For injection stations: remember 10 Rights โ 3 Checks โ Z-track โ Site โ Angle โ Aspirate? โ Inject โ Don't recap
โข For catheter stations: remember 2 Gloves โ Clean โ Anaesthetic โ Wait โ Insert โ Advance past flow โ Inflate โ Replace foreskin โ Secure
โข For wound care: remember ANTT โ Old off โ Hand wash โ Sterile gloves โ Clean centre-out โ Assess (RED/YELLOW/BLACK/PINK) โ New dressing โ Document
